Iron (III) chloride is one of the inorganic salts of iron (iron and hydrochloric acid) in the III oxidation state. In its pure form, it is a crystalline solid with strong hygroscopic properties. The anhydride occurs in the form of a green crystalline powder, but only in reflected light in transmitted light it has a red color. After converting to the hexahydrate form, the product turns yellow-orange.
In aqueous solution, it is rapidly hydrolyzed to form a thick red-brown acidic liquid.
